Police admit the mysterious disappearance of Daniel Rosewall - whose red Mazda 3 was found abandoned on a dirt road about 50km north of Silverton, near Broken Hill, on Friday morning - has left them with few leads.
Mr Rosewall, from Bendigo, was last spotted wearing business-style shoes - despite the barren scrubland and 40C heat.
The local terrain is described as treacherous because of its remoteness and the number of open mines in the area.
Mr Rosewall's car was out of fuel when police found it and it appeared he was ill-equipped for a spell in the bush.
"We don't really know what he was doing," Broken Hill police sergeant Peter Hayes said.
"Sometimes people do go for walks or a drive to look at the sunset or the scenery. But we don't know if that was the case here.
"We understand he was wearing business-type shoes at the time he went missing and you don't wear business shoes in this terrain; you wear very sturdy boots."
The Polair police helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft have been scouring the area along with emergency service ground units since Friday.
Yesterday the hunt centred on an area near Eldee Station and Barrier Ranges but with no success.
A police spokeswoman said officers would decide whether to take the search into a fourth day.
"They will re-evaluate the information they've got and make a decision from there," she said.
Anyone who has seen Mr Rosewall is urged to contact police on 1800 333 000.
He is of caucasian complexion, and is 178cm tall. He has a medium build and short, dark hair.
He was last seen wearing a grey-collared polo shirt, dark shorts, black business shoes and a baseball cap featuring a "Sox" motif.

Broken Hill police in far western New South Wales are in their fourth day of a search for missing Victorian man Daniel Rosewall.
The 28-year-old from Bendigo has been missing since Friday morning.
Last week, local police found his car abandoned on the Wilangi Road, about 50 kilometres north of Silverton.
A police helicopter has been a part of the search, and ground crews, including police, local landowners, the NSW Fire Service and the State Emergency Service are also looking for Mr Rosewall.
Anyone with information about Mr Rosewall's whereabouts is urged to contact Broken Hill police or Crimestoppers.
Four days of extensive air and ground searches of the treacherous region so far have been unsuccessful and will resume again today. Searches were cut short yesterday after a huge dust storm, then rain, led to planes being grounded.
The missing man's red Mazda 3 was discovered by police abandoned on a dirt road 50km north of Silverton about 7am on Friday.
He had been sighted sitting near the car wearing business-style shoes, despite the terrain and 40C heat.
Police said mystery surrounded why he was in the area, and there was no sign of camping equipment or other supplies in his car.
It remains unknown if Mr Rosewall was equipped with food or water.
The family, who have requested respect for their privacy, are at a loss to explain what happened.
Police confirmed the man's parents and uncle travelled to the area on Saturday to help in the investigations and join the search.
The barren sandy area is marked by several open mine shafts.
Broken Hill outback tourism operator Steve Bottom said anyone who was inexperienced and ill-equipped would get into trouble.
"Anyone out there in that heat without proper sun protection could find themselves in trouble," said Mr Bottom, of Outback Explorer tours.
"It's an arid zone, a very dry area. It wouldn't auger well for his survival to be lost out there. But there's people from the stations helping who know that area backwards."
Sgt Peter Hayes, of Broken Hill police, said they were baffled by what Mr Rosewall was doing in the area.
Sgt Hayes said very sturdy boots, not business shoes, were needed in such terrain.
Mr Rosewall is described as 178cm tall, medium build and short, dark hair.
He was last seen wearing a grey collared polo shirt, dark shorts, black business shoes and a baseball cap featuring a "Sox" motif.

About 40 volunteers had to stop searching early yesterday because of dust storms.
Police and emergency services are looking for 28-year-old Daniel Rosewall, who has been missing since Friday morning.
His car was found on a dirt road, with no fuel left.
Sergeant Greg McMahon says police are still optimistic he will be found.
Weather conditions are expected to improve today.
"We had 50-kilometre-an-hour winds early this morning and late yesterday," he said.
"We had a dust storm and visibility was down to five metres, which put everything on the ground. And all the searches had to shelter on the ground while it blew over."

Police in western New South Wales have resumed searching for a Bendigo man. who has been missing for the past five days.
Daniel Rosewall, 28, was reported missing last Friday, north of Silverton near Broken Hill.
The search was interrupted yesterday when bad weather moved in. A dust storm reduced visibility to just five metres.
The weather has cleared and about 40 volunteers have resumed the search.
Sergeant Greg McMahon says despite the hot temperatures, there are plenty of water supplies in the area.
"It's very hard country [but] there's plenty of water around. If he was looking for it, there's plenty of open tanks, and rockholes in the hills," he said.
"Even though it's hot and dry, if he could find water and stay by it, he could certainly survive.'

Broken Hill police say recent rain may help to find missing central Victorian man Daniel Rosewall, who is lost in the New South Wales outback.
Detective Senior Constable Matthew Hemsworth says tracks from the 28-year-old may be visible with a bit of rain and crucial in the effort to finding him.
However, he says the rain could also hinder search efforts if there is too much.
Mr Rosewall, from Bendigo, has now been missing for five days after his car was found abandoned with no fuel about 30 kilometres north of Silverton in far western NSW.
Police say they will continue air searches to find him.

Broken Hill police in far western New South Wales say rumours about a missing man using his credit card since his disappearance are false.
Inspector Grant Lister says it is just one of many rumours circulating about Daniel Rosewall's disappearance from a dirt road north of Silverton last Friday.
Inspector Lister says until more information is received, the search has been temporarily stopped, but police are not ruling out any possibilities as to where Mr Rosewall, from Bendigo in central Victoria, might have gone.
"Wilangi Road is quite a hard packed road and it hadn't been raining at the time so there is evidence he's been at the location where the car was," he said.
"But as far as footprints, no - the road was packed too hard.
At this stage he could have walked either direction - certainly we've canvassed all the local trucking companies and the locals there and no one's picked the gentleman up."
The family of a 28-year-old Victorian man who vanished in outback NSW more than a fortnight ago say his disappearance is a complete mystery.
A red Mazda driven by Daniel Rosewall was found abandoned and out of fuel on a dirt road about 50km north of Silverton, near Broken Hill on January 29.
Inside the car, which he had borrowed from his family, were his wallet, his mobile phone with a dead battery and a baseball cap.
Police are also baffled by the disappearance, noting Mr Rosewall was wearing business shoes despite the temperature of 40C and barren scrubland.
Mr Rosewall's parents, David and Julie, have no idea why he travelled to NSW from his Bendigo home — a journey of around 772km — and doubt if he had ever been to the area before.
But they refuse to give up hope of finding him and released new photos on Sunday in the hope of jogging the memory of anyone who knows his whereabouts.
They last saw him in Bendigo when he arrived for work at the family business on Wednesday, January 27, and say he appeared normal.
"We received a phone call on Friday night to say that (the police) had found our car in Broken Hill," Mr Rosewall's father said.
"We have absolutely no idea why Daniel would go to Broken Hill. Daniel doesn't have any friends or connections that we know of in Broken Hill.
"I doubt he had ever even been to Broken Hill before now."
Mr Rosewall's parents say their son did nothing to indicate he was planning a trip and say there was nothing significant in his life to trigger his disappearance.
The family spent almost two weeks helping with a major air and land search, but have now returned to Bendigo.
"Disappearing like this is completely out of character for Daniel," Mr Rosewall's father added.
"We are baffled. We have no idea what has happened or where he is.
"It is a mystery to us why he would head to Broken Hill in the first place.
"We just hope that he is safe and well and until we hear any differently, we will stay focused on finding him.
"Daniel is a really nice guy and respected by those who know him.
"We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all those involved in the search for Daniel in Broken Hill."
A Facebook page has been set up to assist the search.
Anyone who has seen Mr Rosewall is urged to contact police on 1800 333 000.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 178cm tall, of medium build and with short, dark hair.
He was last seen wearing a grey-collared polo shirt, dark-coloured shorts and black business shoes.

Mr Rosewall's car was found abandoned, out of fuel, on a dirt road about 50 kilometres north of Silverton on January 29.
While the police investigation remains open, David Rosewall, the father of the missing man, says there is no point in the family returning to Broken Hill to continue the search.
"The police don't believe that Daniel is in Broken Hilll ... their words to us are that if Daniel was in Broken Hill, because it is such a small town, they would be aware of it, and they are not aware of any stranger in Broken Hill itself," he said.
Anyone who has seen Mr Rosewall is urged to contact police.

- ABCThe mysterious disappearance of a Bendigo man near Silverton earlier this year has prompted the Victorian Government to change its laws to allow a missing person's friend or family to manage their financial affairs.
The missing man's father, David Rosewall, has successfully lobbied for the change after his son Daniel vanished without trace in January.
Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls says the changes will be introduced into Parliament today.
"When a person goes missing, for whatever reason and for however long, they often leave behind financial obligations - bills, rent, mortgages and in some cases kids and other dependants. Families and friends often find themselves spending their own money," he said.

The Government is proposing to change the laws after a campaign by the family of missing Bendigo man Daniel Rosewall.
Mr Rosewall has not been seen since January, but under current rules his family cannot manage his debts and assets.
The Shadow Attorney-General Robert Clark says the Opposition needs more detail, but supports what the proposal is trying to achieve.
"The Bill will probably be made public on Thursday and debate will be adjourned for two weeks," he said.
"If there are any amendments the Coalition or minor parties wish to move, those can be moved during the course of the debate."

- ABCPolice in New South Wales say they remain hopeful of uncovering new leads in the search for missing Bendigo man Daniel Rosewall, who has not been seen for a year.
Mr Rosewall's abandoned car was found near Silverton in south-west NSW last January but a five-day search of the area failed to find him.
Broken Hill-based Detective Inspector Mick Stoltenberg says Mr Rosewall's photo still features on missing persons lists.
He says police are currently investigating the discovery of 48 bones in the Menindee area but the bones were found about 150 kilometres from where Mr Rosewall's car was left.
"We're not discounting who these bones may well belong to. There's obviously a process that needs to take place now involving forensic testing," he said.
"We're hopeful that we'll receive a DNA profile at some time in the future but unfortunately these things take time."

Police in far west New South Wales are investigating whether human remains found on a cattle station are those of a Central Victorian man who went missing two years ago.
Daniel Rosewall was last seen in Bendigo in January 2010, and his abandoned car was found near Silverton last year.
Police conducted an extensive search at the time.
On Sunday, a stockman found human remains among bushes on a nearby property that was part of the search area.
Detective Inspector Mick Stoltenberg from the Barrier Local Area Command says police are investigating the remains.
"We're not discounting anything," he said.
"We're obviously asking the necessary questions of our missing persons database that we have here in NSW and we'll be relying on forensic examination to assist us with a positive identification."
Det. Insp. Stoltenberg said there was no evidence found with the human remains.
"It was apparent they'd been there for some time, quite some time," he said.
"What we're talking about is virtually skeletal remains."
He said police will try to match evidence with that from the state's missing persons database.
"NSW police have a database which any person who's recorded as missing and has not been located or recovered, their details and information is stored on that," he said.
"So that's obviously one of the many investigative tools that we can access."
