A search is underway south of Forster NSW for a fisherman reported missing yesterday.

Water Police and volunteers from the Forster Tuncurry Surf Life Saving club have been searching an area off McBrides beach in the Booti Booti National Park.

Yesterday a fisherman reported a red car had been abandoned on the beach, and a short time later another man went to the Forster Police Station to report his friend Peter Cooke was missing.

Police have confirmed 54-year-old Mr Cooke owns the red car, and have now commenced a large-scale search.

Serious concerns are held for his welfare, and the search is expected to be expanded onto land today.

Anyone who believes they may have seen Mr Cooke is urged to get in touch with police.

He's described as being of Caucasian appearance, roughly 173 centimetres tall, with a thin build and dark, balding hair.
