THE discovery of bones on a Collarenebri property could be the vital missing link to the disappearance of a Queensland truck driver who went missing eight years ago.

A farm worker discovered the bones in a paddock on a rural property a week ago.

Police officers and a forensic pathologist went to the property to formally identify the remains, which were sent to Sydney for forensic testing and to confirm they were human.

Police said the forensics results would determine which direction their investigation would take, but confirmed they were investigating a link to the remains, which could belong to Broadbeach truck driver James Douglas Whyte.

Friends and relatives of Mr Whyte last heard from him on November 15, 2003, when he contacted his fiancee by phone while travelling through Walgett.

The next day, his purple semi-trailer was found abandoned on a 38,000-hectare cotton farm, about 30km east of Collaranebri.

Mr Whyte was 31 when he disappeared.

At the time of his disappearance, emergency services workers, including NSW police, SES and Rural Fire Service volunteers, assisted by police aircraft, conducted an extensive search of the area.

Walgett police, who are heading up the investigation, told The Leader it could be a fortnight before the bones were identified.
