As you can imagine, I have a vast collection of photographs of missing persons. The photos of the missing are of people who were happy when their photos were taken. When those photos were taken, those people had no idea they’d one day be used on a missing person poster. They had no idea I would post them again and again on Facebook, on the internet, on my website. Photographs are powerful things, they tell a story without words. The photos I have chosen here in this collection are not of the missing, but of those who miss the missing. It is these photographs that really get to me. The photos of the missing, their smiley, happy faces, I have become as used to seeing them as my own family. But these photos need no words; to know how the family of a missing person feels, you just have to look at their faces. When these photos were taken, the people in them had one aim – to find their loved one. They hope that maybe their missing person will see these photos and know their family is still looking for them. Or that the person who knows where they are will see it and make that call. They are some of the most important photos they will ever have taken. Some of these people are making appeals for missing people who have been since been found. Some of the people in these photos are also no longer alive to make appeals, so it’s up to us to carry on their solemn task. Thank you to all the photographers from the media around Australia who took these beautiful shots, I apologise for being unable to credit you.
