Police call in help for massive search

HUNDREDS of police, firefighters and State Emergency Service volunteers blanketed Noosa's beaches and national parks in a mammoth two-day search for a missing man.

Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club became the operation's headquarters on Sunday for the start of the search for Brisbane man Simon Davidson.

Seventy-two SES volunteers and 80 police and firefighters scoured the dunes from Sunshine Beach to Peregian Beach on Sunday.

They returned yesterday and headed deep into Noosa National Park.

The orange SES jumpsuits were barely visible in the thick scrub of the national park.

Senior Sergeant Hardy Worth confirmed the search was unfortunately for a body and not for a missing person.

But despite a team of 254 people searching a three-kilometre radius, Snr Sgt Worth said the task was like looking for "a needle in a haystack".

No trace of Mr Davidson was found. The 43-year-old was last seen on October 29 when he checked out of a holiday resort at Sunshine Beach.

He was believed to have been in the Noosa Heads area for two weeks before his disappearance.

His bank account, credit cards and passport have not been touched.

Snr Sgt Worth said the disappearance was being treated as a suspected suicide and the search was protocol to prepare a report for the coroner.

"We have information that this man was a recluse by nature so we were expecting him to be in areas that are not high traffic areas," Snr Sgt Worth said.

"There was no activation of his bank accounts, money, phone or passport and essentially there had been no movement since he was last seen, so this now becomes a follow-up recovery issue.''

Mr Davidson's family travelled to the Coast on Sunday in the hope of news.

Anyone needing support or information about suicide prevention should contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
