Sister shares heartbreak of twin brother's disappearance during National Missing Person's Week

By Dominique Bayens

It's been more than seven months since Annette Milne, from Western Australia's South West, last saw her twin brother Phillip Jones — but not a day goes by that she isn't looking for him.

The 55-year-old Dunsborough man disappeared in December last year after he called his sister to catch up for coffee.

At the time, Ms Milne did not realise her brother was grappling with his mental health.

"I actually believe he was coming to say goodbye," she said.

Ms Milne did not realise her brother was missing until her mother, concerned that Mr Jones had not returned home, called her several days later.

"I went over to mum's house and I actually picked up his computer off his bed," Ms Milne said.

'A downward spiral'

Ms Milne said she opened her brother's laptop and found a note confirming her fears.

"[He said] he'd been in a downward spiral since his divorce 10 years ago and he needed to find his peace," she said.

Ms Milne and her mother immediately informed the police, sparking a search of the South West.

"They were walking the streets, they were walking the shopping centres, they were asking locals," she said.

'Not a day goes by'

According to the Australian Federal Police, 38,000 missing persons reports were submitted to police every year in Australia.

National Missing Persons Week runs until August 8, with the aim of increasing awareness around the issues and impacts of missing people.

Ms Milne hoped that sharing her story would help to bring her family closure.

"If someone passes away from an illness or an accident, you grieve," she said.

"Every day I look for my brother, not a day goes by that I don't look for him.

"I'm still one of two — I'll always be one of two, whether he's here or not."

The National Missing Persons hotline number is 1800 000 634.
