Posted Sat May 10, 2008 5:21pm AEST  - ABC

Police have declared the disappearance of 23-year-old South Australian man Paulo Gorge Miranda a major crime.

Mr Miranda was last seen by a friend in Adelaide a week ago.

Police say his mobile phone is off and his car has been found burnt-out north of Adelaide at Port Prime.

Detective Inspector Doug Barr says another cause for concern is that some of Mr Miranda's associates are involved in the illicit drug trade.

"He's usually in regular contact with his family and friends and no contact has been made since that time," he said.

"We've had mounting fears over the course of the last week and it's come to the point now where we are concerned for his safety and welfare."

Man's disappearance could be drug related: SA police

Police in South Australia say the disappearance of a young western suburbs man could be linked to the illicit drug trade in Adelaide.

Twenty-three-year-old Paulo Jorge Miranda was last seen on the morning of May 3.

His disappearance has been declared a major crime.

Detective Inspector Doug Barr says his family and friends have not heard from Mr Miranda in more than a week.

"Paulo's mobile phone's turned off and his car that he was driving was a silver Corolla, which was his brother's vehicle," he said.

"We located that on Thursday evening out at Port Prime north of Adelaide."

Detective Inspector Barr says there is cause for concern as some of Mr Miranda's associates are involved in the illicit drug trade.

"These factors and a number of others have given us serious concerns for his welfare," he said.

Police search for suspected murder victim

South Australian police have confirmed that blood found in a house at Pooraka in Adelaide's northern suburbs belonged to Paulo Jorge Miranda, who disappeared more than a month ago.

A park opposite the house was searched today for evidence, as was an area at Port Prime, near where Mr Miranda's burnt out car was found.

Mr Miranda was last seen on May 3 when he left a friend's house at Woodville and was reported to have been at a fast food restaurant at Croydon days later.

Detective Inspector Doug Barr says the disappearance of the 23-year-old from Mansfield Park is now being treated as a homicide investigation.

"A number of other factors, other evidence which we have gathered, leads us to the inevitable conclusion that he has met with foul play," he said.

"The disappearance of Mr Miranda is, there's no doubt about it, related to the drug scene.

"This is not a random incident, there are motives, there's a lot of people out there who knew what happened and we would appeal for those people to come forward and tell the police precisely what they know."

Missing man Paulo Miranda 'captured by bounty hunters'

A MISSING man was captured by bounty hunters after a $5000 price put on his head by a Vietnamese drug lord, a court has heard.

Lawyers for alleged bounty hunter Huan Hoang Lam Nguyen today claimed Paulo Miranda may not be dead but simply "did not want to be found".

Prosecutor Lucy Boord told the Adelaide Magistrates Court that if Mr Miranda was still among the living he had managed to survive without much of his blood, AdelaideNow reports.

"It's indeed possible Mr Miranda went off on his own, not wanting to be found," she said.

"But if that is the case, he has left a large amount of his blood all around a garage at Parafield Gardens, where we say he was murdered."

Mr Nguyen, 18, is one of five men charged with killing Mr Miranda, whose body has not been recovered.

Prosecutors allege that he – along with others including alleged methamphetamine dealer Ngoc Thai Tran – murdered Mr Miranda over an unpaid drug debt.

Previously, the court has heard  Mr Nguyen's DNA was found inside a pair of gloves, the outer surface of which was soaked with Mr Miranda's blood.

Today, Mr Nguyen's lawyer asked his client be released on home detention bail, saying prosecutors could not prove Mr Miranda – a drug dealer himself – had not chosen to disappear.

Ms Boord said that was incorrect.

"Paulo Miranda was heavily involved in the drug scene... in the months leading up to his murder he was working for Ngoc Tran," she said.

"Mr Miranda then went out on his own... Tran then said he was owed a debt of $40,000.

"He put a $5000 contract out for Paulo Miranda to be brought to him so he could reclaim the debt."
