Car find prompts fears

A Unanderra man whose burnt-out car was found yesterday may have been the victim of an underworld hit.

The Mercury can reveal that Goran Nikolovski, who has been missing since Monday, was an associate of convicted drug dealer Saso Ristevski, who was executed in front of his family at his Lake Heights home on September 28.

Both men had spent time in jail after being convicted of drug trafficking in 2005.

Mr Nikolovski, 35, was reported missing by his family after he and his silver-grey Honda sedan disappeared from his Princes Hwy home late on Monday night.

Lake Illawarra Detective Chief Inspector Michael McLean said Mr Nikolovski's incinerated car was found in bushland on Macquarie Pass by the Rural Fire Service and there was reason to believe the vehicle had been there for a number of days.

Insp McLean said Mr Nikolovski's bank account had not been accessed since his disappearance and there was "nothing to suggest any activity". "We're certainly very concerned and we hold grave fears for his welfare," he said.

"There's nothing at this point in time, through our investigations, which would indicate that he's alive, albeit, we're still keeping an open mind in relation to that.

"In the likelihood he is still alive, we're still proactively investigating that aspect and we're trying to locate him."

Police spent most of yesterday searching bushland on Macquarie Pass with the assistance of the State Emergency Service.

"The scene still remains a crime scene so forensic examinations are ongoing. Part of our examinations will include a full search of the area," Insp McLean said.

"It's a big area to search, the scope will depend on what we find."

Insp McLean said police had not confirmed a link between the disappearance of Mr Nikolovski and the murder of Mr Ristevski.

He would not comment on whether the two men were associated.

Mr Ristevski, 37, was jailed for 6.5 years in January 2005 for supplying cocaine worth an estimated $82,000.

At an appeal against his conviction heard by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal in February 2007, facts outlined Mr Ristevski's association with Mr Nikolovski.

In his summary, Justice McClellan said telephone conversations intercepted by police in January 2004 revealed "Nikolovski was involved in the drug trade with persons other than [Ristevski]".

The Crown said Mr Ristevski purchased the drugs but he claimed he was a courier for Mr Nikolovski.

Mr Ristevski had been out on parole for just over a year when an argument with three unknown men turned violent on September 28 and he was gunned down in front of his parents in his Barina Ave home.

The hunt continues for his murderer.

Insp McLean called for information on Mr Nikolovski's disappearance and particularly wanted to speak to anyone who may have travelled in the Macquarie Pass area in the early hours of Tuesday.

Mr Nikolovski is described as Caucasian in appearance, with a solid build, about 175cm tall, with long brown hair usually tied in a ponytail.

He was last seen wearing a light blue T-shirt, black tracksuit pants and a black baseball cap. His Honda sedan had NSW registration BEA 23J.

Anyone with information that can assist is urged to contact Lake Illawarra Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Macquarie Pass will be closed to traffic today and tomorrow as police scour bushland for clues to the disappearance of Unanderra man Goran Nikolovski.

Up to 100 volunteers from the State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service will join police to search large sections of dense scrub in Macquarie Pass National Park.

Although the area has already been the subject of a detailed search in the days after Mr Nikolovski's disappearance, police want to ensure no stone is left unturned in their investigation.

Police believe Mr Nikolovski may have met with foul play and are treating his disappearance as suspicious.

Macquarie Pass will be closed in both directions today and tomorrow from 8am to 4pm.

Mr Nikolovski (pictured) was reported missing by family after the 35-year-old and his car disappeared from his Unanderra home on Monday, October 31.

Just days later his car was found burnt out on a road off Macquarie Pass.

Strike Force Calligan, led by the homicide squad with assistance from Lake Illawarra and Wollongong detectives, was formed to investigate Mr Nikolovski's disappearance.

Detectives say they are unsure what they may locate but hope to find any evidence that could shed some light on the missing man's whereabouts.

"We just need to be satisfied that we're undertaking a comprehensive search of the area where the vehicle was found," Lake Illawarra crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Michael McLean said.

"It's appropriate given all the circumstances that we exhaust all of our inquiries in the area."

Police have renewed their appeal for any information into Mr Nikolovski's disappearance.

Mr Nikolovski was an associate of Lake Heights man Saso Ristevski who was gunned down in front of his parents at their home on September 28.

The hunt for his murderer continues.

Police have not confirmed a link between Mr Ristevski's murder and Mr Nikolovski's disappearance.

However, Mercury investigations reveal both men spent time in jail after being convicted of drug trafficking in 2005.

Mr Nikolovski is described as Caucasian, about 175cm tall, with a solid build and long brown hair usually tied in a pony tail.

He was last seen driving his silver/grey Honda sedan with NSW registration BEA 23J.

Search on for missing man

Updated November 28, 2011 13:42:47 - ABC

About 150 police and volunteers from the State Emergency Service and the Rural Fire Service spent the weekend scouring bushland along Macquarie Pass as part of an investigation into the suspicious disappearance of a Unanderra man.

Goran Nikolovski, 35, went missing late last month.

His burnt-out car was found in bush just off Macquarie Pass the next day.

Homicide detectives from the State Crime Command are leading the investigation which has been dubbed Strikeforce Calligan.

Acting Inspector John Kelpczarek says police will review several items found during the search which was conducted over difficult terrain.

"The search teams conducted a quite thorough and comprehensive search from the base of Macquarie Pass right to the top, so there's several kilometres of bushland as well as vertical drops that they covered during the two days," he said.

Detectives are examining several items found during a large-scale search of Macquarie Pass on the weekend which may be linked to the suspicious disappearance of Unanderra man Goran Nikolovski.

About 100 police and volunteers braved testing weather conditions to scoured large expanses of dense scrub in Macquarie National Park, searching for clues to the 35-year-old’s disappearance.

Lake Illawarra Acting Inspector John Klepczarek said he could not reveal what items were found but the search had been worthwhile.

‘‘A number of items were seized by police and detectives will sift through those items in the upcoming weeks,’’ he said.

Macquarie Pass was closed to traffic for several hours on Saturday and yesterday, to allow a safe and thorough search of the area. Abseilers were called in to rappel down steep stretches of terrain to ensure difficult-to-reach areas were inspected.

The area was searched extensively, in the days after Mr Nikolovski’s disappearance, but detectives wanted to ensure no details had been overlooked.

Police believe the 35-year-old may have met with foul play.
