POLICE fear for the safety of a boy who was carried away after being run down by a car.

Superintendent Rob Burgoyne said: "We're concerned that the child is seriously hurt."

Officers have searched for the youngster intensely since the incident.

Witnesses watched in horror as the boy - described as aged about 10, indigenous and with a striking blond Mohawk haircut - jumped out of the car near the Mobil service station on Larapinta Drv, Alice Springs, about 10.15pm yesterday.

He ran down the road.

The car spun around, raced after him and ran him down.

Witnesses told police the boy was knocked 2m into the air.

"It was a serious hit," Supt Burgoyne said.

People got out of the car, picked up the boy, put him in the vehicle and drove off at speed.

Witnesses said the youngster's body was "limp" as he was carried away.

The car - descibed as maroon Ford Falcon sedan with a rear spoiler with a non-working left front headlight - was last seen speeding along Larapinta Drv towards Hermannsburg.

No number plate was noted.

"We've checked with the hospital and clinics, but there's no sign of the boy," Supt Burgoyne said.

Police received a report from a motorist travelling outbound on Larapinta Drive just before 11pm on Tuesday. The driver told police she was travelling behind an older model maroon Ford Falcon sedan which was driving erratically. The vehicle then pulled over and a small child got out of the vehicle and began walking eastwards. The driver of the Ford Falcon then did a u-turn and followed the child for a short distance before the vehicle hit the victim. A man got out of the vehicle and dragged the child back into the car. The car then sped off outbound along Larapinta Drive.

Despite extensive patrols and inquiries, Police are yet to identify the car or the people involved in this incident. Police have been liaising with the Alice Springs Hospital and the community clinics in the area however, none have any record of a child being brought in with injuries consistent with being hit by a car. Police have also identified and eliminated several cars similar to the one believed to have been involved in the incident.

Detective Sergeant Janelle Snigg said police were again appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who could identify the people involved.

“We have spoken to a large number of people in this regard and also patrolled all the communities and remote outstations where the alleged offender may have gone, but it’s baffling to us that no-one appears to have any knowledge of this incident.,” Det Sgt Snigg said.

“ We’ve also viewed CCTV footage of the area where the offence was supposed to have taken place, but have found nothing of significance to support what occurred.

“Obviously we will continue our inquiries into this matter and are appealing for anyone with any information to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
