Body thought to be missing businessman

Posted Wed Oct 7, 2009 12:07pm AEDT - ABC

New South Wales police believe they have found the body of a 33-year-old Mildura man who has been missing for two weeks.

Police say a body was found in grass beside the Old Euston Road about 1:00pm (AEDT) yesterday at Monak, about 30 kilometres from Mildura in north-west Victoria.

It is believed to be that of Pardeep Kumar, who was last seen at the Mildura Library on September 25 when he went there for a business meeting.

Specialist forensic officers from Sydney examined the scene yesterday, but it is not yet clear whether the NSW homicide squad will take up the investigation.

Police say the man's body was found by a person who had stopped for lunch in the area.

Victorian homicide squad detectives have handed the investigation to their counterparts in NSW, but Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles says Mr Kumar's business activities had been the subject of the Victorian investigation.

"Since Pardeep's been in Australia he has developed himself into a contractor and had ... around 35 Indian nationals working for him, so he worked on a lot of big fruit blocks in the area ... we know that he was here at the library and he did meet someone," he said.

"We have information and we have a witness who saw him talking to two other Indians."

A special police task force has been formed to investigate the discovery of a man's body at Monak, near Mildura, last week.

The body is believed to be that of missing Mildura businessman Pardeep Kumar, but police say DNA comparisons will be needed to confirm the identity of the body.

Detectives say they are uncertain how long it will take to identify the body of a man found near Mildura more than a week ago.

The man's body was found beside the Old Euston Road at Monak last Tuesday and it is believed to be that of missing Mildura labour contractor Pardeep Kumar, 33.

New South Wales officers with Task Force Tizah, investigating the death, are not releasing the results from a post-mortem investigation on Friday to establish the cause and time of the man's death.

They say the man's identity needs to be verified by DNA testing and it is not known how long that will take.

Victorian detectives say any information they get in their missing person investigation into Mr Kumar's disappearance will now be passed on to Task Force Tizah.

Murder, drowning and industrial accident kill men

THREE men have died quite differently but all are linked to northern Victoria.

One was murdered, another died in an industrial accident and the other drowned.

Police are investigating the deaths of all three.

The first is Mildura man Pardeep Kumar (pictured) who’s uncle has arrived in Australia to bring his nephew’s remains back home to India.

Police have still not confirmed the body found at Monak in September is Mr Kumar, but his family is in little doubt.

The uncle, Vinon Kumar Sharma, claimed his nephew’s throat was cut before he was dumped on the roadside.
