Friends of a teenager missing, feared drowned, in a dam in the NSW Hunter region heard a loud "thud" as the boy jumped into the water.

Police divers will today search a 30-metre-deep section of Glenbawn Dam in the Lake Glenhaven State Park for the 17-year-old from Scone, who did not resurface after jumping off a boat about 4pm yesterday.

He and four friends had taken two boats out on the dam, a popular boating, fishing and water-skiing spot about 15 minutes west of Scone, Hunter Valley police duty officer Paul Lighezzolo said.

The boys were about 100 metres off the dam’s eastern shore when the 17-year-old and a friend decided to jump into the water.

‘‘At this stage it looks like they’ve jumped off opposite sides of the boat. [The boys in the second boat] heard a thud and our young fellow hasn’t resurfaced,’’ acting Inspector Lighezzolo said.

‘‘We don’t know if he’s collided with the side of the boat or a submerged log.’’
