POLICE hold grave fears for the safety of a man missing for several weeks after he hitched a ride out of an Aboriginal community in the state's far north.

Gary David Finlay, of Yalata, was last seen at Mimili in the APY Lands on January 6.

Police have been told that Mr Finlay hitched a ride to a range of locations, including Coober Pedy, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Alice Springs, Wingelina, Blackstone, Warburton and Docker River.

But police inquiries in all of those places have proved fruitless.

"Police hold fears for Mr Finlay's safety and ask any member of the public who may have given Mr Finlay a lift since January 6 or who has any information in regards to his whereabouts to contact police urgently,'' Murputja Sergeant Rob Harding said.

Mr Finlay is Aboriginal, 65kg, medium build, 170cm with short black curly hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion.

Anyone with information should contact Bank SA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
