Family say goodbye to little angel

Melanie Maeseele | 2nd February 2011 - The Chronicle

JESSICA Lily-Ann Keep's beautiful big eyes and gorgeous smile will be forever etched in the hearts and minds of her family and friends.

Parents Matthew and Stacy Keep yesterday said a heartbreaking goodbye to their “little angel” who had given them so much pleasure in her short life.

Jessica, 23 months, was torn from her heavily pregnant mother's arms when a raging torrent of water tore through their Grantham home on January 10.

Mr and Mrs Keep also lost their mothers, Pauline Magner and Dawn Radke, in the horrific flash flood.

Mr Keep yesterday told a service of about 250 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Gatton: “Words cannot even begin to describe you Jess. We love you very much.”

The pair's three other young children, Alexandra, Madison and Jacob, comforted their parents with kisses and cuddles.

A moving slide-show of photographs capturing the close-knit family's fondest memories played as the songs, You are so beautiful, by Joe Cocker and All good things come to an end by Nelly Furtado played in the background.

Father John Conway told mourners the tragedy of losing three family members had “shattered their lives... turning it upside down in an instant”.

“Because of the love you share, your life will go on,” he said.

The Keep family sat less than a metre away from their youngest child as she lay in a beautifully decorated white coffin adorned with white lilies.

“Jessica will always be in our midst, so too your mothers. Now they are in peace,” Fr Conway said.

Mr Keep's mother, Mrs Magner, was farewelled in a funeral service in Gatton last Friday, while a remembrance service for Mrs Keep's mother Dawn Radke was held in conjunction with Jessica's funeral yesterday.

Mr Keep thanked his mother-in-law Dawn, whose body has not yet been found, for all her assistance.

Mr and Mrs Keep, along with some of their closest family members, carried their daughter to a waiting hearse outside the church as Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton echoed throughout the church.

Little Jessica, whose body was found 35km away from her home, was laid to rest in the Gatton Cemetery.

Three flood victims laid to rest

Melanie Maeseele Queensland Times | 1st February 2011

RURAL firefighter Danny McGuire yesterday had the heart-wrenching task of burying his family.

Mr McGuire, supported by his only surviving child, Zachary, 7, said a final farewell to his wife, eldest son and only daughter – all taken when a torrent of water ripped through their home town of Grantham.

Llync-Chiann Clark-Jibson, also a rural firefighter, son Garry Jibson, 12, and daughter Joscelyn, 5, died after Mr McGuire desperately tried to escape an eight-metre wall of water on the afternoon of January 10.

But the torrent of water engulfed the rural fire truck Mr McGuire and his family were in – he scrambled to safety pushing his son Zach up a tree and telling him to “hold on”.

The pair spent eight hours clinging to a tree while their upturned vehicle bobbed in the water below.

Yesterday mourners were led by a procession of rural fire trucks including a sentimental Holden ute with Llync's white coffin in its tray, closely followed by her two children, also in decorative white coffins, as they took their final journey.

The procession made its way through Gatton's main street to the Gatton Cemetery where the trio were received by a piper and a guard of honour made up of rural firefighters.

In an emotional graveside service, family and friends yesterday recalled the “fateful day” that took away their “angels”.

“They touched everyone's lives,” a family member told the hundreds of mourners which included family, friends, rural and urban firefighters, the children's school friends and childcare workers.

“Llync loved her family and was a great wife, and a very good mum.”

Llync first met her soulmate Danny at the Gold Coast when she began working for him in the fibreglass industry. She was just 16.

“Llync was a very hard worker, putting blokes to shame,” her family said.

Three-and-a-half years ago the family moved from the Gold Coast to Grantham. The shift was a struggle for Llync, who loved to shop. But the move was made a little easier with their children thriving on the region's rural landscape.

“Garry was very much an outdoors boy. He loved being outside with his brother and sister, their dogs and pushbikes, especially when there was no petrol for the motorbikes,” the family said.

“Jocelyn was very much a dad's girl and really loved riding her quad bike that she received for Christmas. She especially loved competing against her brothers.”

Tears flowed as a dozen balloons were released by childcare workers who had the “pleasure” of knowing the children, while family and friends placed masses of flowers on their coffins in a final farewell.

Grantham great-grandmother Jean Gurr, 88, mourned in third flood funeral

MORE than 70 close family and friends gathered at the Laidley Crematorium this morning to farewell Grantham great grandmother Jean Gurr - the third victim to be buried after Queensland's flood disaster.

During the service mourners were asked to not only grieve the loss of Mrs Gurr, 88, but also the numerous other people who perished during the ``tragic'' disaster and for the countless family and friends who mourn their deaths.

During a moving eulogy, delivered by the funeral celebrant on behalf of Mrs Gurr's children Andrew and Judith, Mrs Gurr was described as a ``strong woman, stubborn, gentle but direct and even had a sense of humour.''

After the funeral, Andrew Gurr said it was of considerable comfort to the family it was unlikely his mother was aware of wall of water as it engulfed her home and that she would have passed away ``relatively peacefully.''

``Even in this significant tragedy it gives (us) great (comfort),'' he said.
