On 11 December 2000, Clare set off on a hike at Lake St Clair National Park which is 165 km north-west of Hobart. Clare intended to hike the area and return to Hobart on 21 December.

On 20 December, other walkers saw a female who was possibly Clare at an area known as the Labyrinth. Clare did not return to Hobart as planned and she was subsequently reported missing.

Despite large-scale searches, Clare was not located and she remains a missing person. At time of her disappearance, Clare was aged 20 years.
