Appeal for information about man missing since 1987 – Mid North Coast

Wednesday, 13 Oct 2010 12:19pm

NSW Detectives from Mid North Coast Local Area Command are renewing their appeals for information about a man last seen in the Nambucca Heads area in the late 1980s.

Several investigations have been made into the disappearance of Ian Braund, who was last seen on a farm at Thumb Creek, about 30km from Taylors Arm, in 1987. Mr Braund was aged 21 at the time of disappearance.

Mr Braund had left a Newcastle health facility in February 1987 and was living with his brother on an 8ha-farm on Taylors Arm Road.

Police were told Mr Braund went for a walk on the property with one of his dogs on 27 February 1987 and has not been seen since. His dog returned to the farm house a few days later with an injured paw.

Heavy rain and flooding hit the region for about 10 days after Mr Braund went missing, hampering searchers. All of Mr Braund’s possessions were left behind at the farm house and his personal bank accounts were not accessed.

Officer-in-charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Constable Justin Welsh, said Mr Braund had family still searching for answers to his disappearance.

“Ian was only a young man when he disappeared and his parents – who were living in Adelaide at the time – spent hours travelling to the NSW North Coast and inquiring after him.

“His surviving three brothers and sister still live in South Australia, and they still hope for a resolution to his disappearance.

“We are appealing for anyone who remembers Ian being in the district about this time, and has information about his movements.

“We anticipate the NSW Coroner’s office will be holding an inquest into Ian’s disappearance in the near future and we hope new information will assist us to prepare the brief,” Det Snr Cst Welsh said.

Anyone with information about Ian Braund is urged to contact Nambucca Heads Detectives 65 985 324 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Case re-opened 23 years on

IT’S a baffling mystery that has confounded police and the Nambucca Valley community for 23 years.

Detectives have renewed their appeal for information on the disappearance of Ian Braund, who was last seen on a farm at Thumb Creek, about 30 kilometres from Taylors Arm, in 1987.

He was aged 21 at the time and the cold case is now likely to become a coroner’s inquest.

Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Constable Justin Welsh, said he was yet to hear from community members since the appeal was made this week.

“I have had calls from police who were involved in the original investigation,” Const. Welsh said. “But I would especially like to hear from anyone who may have been involved in the search for Mr Braund or had any- thing to do with him.”

Mr Braund had left a Newcastle health facility in February 1987 and was living with his brother on an eight-hectare farm on Taylors Arm Road.

“Police were told Mr Braund went for a walk on the property with one of his dogs on February 27, and has not been seen since. His dog returned to the farmhouse a few days later with an injured paw,” Const. Welsh said.

“Heavy rain and flooding hit the region for about 10 days after Mr Braund went missing, hampering searchers. All of Mr Braund’s possessions were left behind at the farmhouse and his personal bank accounts were not accessed.”

Const Welsh said Mr Braund’s family was still searching for answers.

“Ian was only a young man when he disappeared and his parents, who were living in Adelaide at the time, spent hours travelling to the NSW North Coast and inquiring after him.

“His surviving three brothers and a sister still live in South Australia and they still hope for a resolution to his disappearance.

“We are appealing for anyone who remembers Ian being in the district about this time and has information about his movements.

“We anticipate the NSW Coroner’s office will be holding an inquest into Ian’s disappearance in the near future and we hope new information will assist us to prepare the brief.”
