Circumstances

Between 09:00am and 10:00am on Wednesday 16 October 2019 Bernie Tyson left his residence at House 3 Urapunga Community NT to go on his daily walk into nearby bushland. He was observed leaving the community on foot and was last seen near the vicinity of the old abattoir dressed in a light coloured t-shirt or collared shirt, black coloured shorts, wearing thongs and carrying a black Mission Australia bag. His direction of travel was reported to be along the fence-line of the Urapunga Airstrip in a westerly direction. His eldest son, Heston had purchased a tin of Log Cabin tobacco for his father from the local community store early that morning and he departed the community likely carrying with him provisions for the day including a tin of meat and an unknown quantity of water. Bernie was known to walk every day but never overnight, always returning before the end of the day.

Bernie’s sons became concerned when their father failed to return that evening and began a search utilising the assistance of local community members, after sighting a fire up on the escarpment area to the north-west of the community.

Police were notified the following morning and despite an extensive five day SARMAC search by air, land, and water Bernie was not found. The weather on the day Bernie went missing and the following days during the search were extreme, with daytime temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius with no rain and high humidity.
