A Sydney coroner has closed a missing persons case involving a young prostitute who vanished 18 years ago.

Anne-Marie Young disappeared after being dropped off at Lakemba, in Sydney's west, in May 1990.

The 19-year-old from Chatswood had been using heroin since she was 16 and took up sex work in 1988 to support her habit.

Coroner Paul McMahon told the court it is likely she died on or around the time she went missing.

He says Miss Young had a close relationship with her mother and he believed she would have contacted her if she was still alive.

Police have not been able to find any trace of Miss Young.

The coroner said it is impossible to determine how she died.
